Ace Frehley: Anomaly

09/10/09  ||  Euthanatos

I have no idea why I picked this album up to review. I can’t stand Kiss (sure, I can enjoy “Rock N Roll All Nite”, but that’s as far as I go). I think Ace Frehley is a drunken has been. I wish they would all die curled up in a ball together. So why did I do it? Maybe just that feeling we get when going past an accident. We have to look. Maybe I had some hope of actually enjoying this. Maybe I thought that, far from Gene Simmons’ greedy talons, Ace would release some ballsy rock album. Nah. I’m an idiot.

This isn’t as terrible as you would imagine. You can do anything in a studio these days, and no matter how fucked up of a train-wreck Ace might or might not have been while recording, things actually sound decent. Alas, everything is just so fucking sub-par, though. The singing, the playing, the lyrics are a fucking joke.

Songwriting-wise, things aren’t too bleak, though. There are some nifty guitar moments, like in “Outer Space” and “Pain in the Neck”. Shame they’re back to back. Spread them out, Ace, so we can have something to look forward to. But things like “Genghis Khan” and “Fox on the Run” make it painfully obvious that (a) Ace can’t sing; (b) Ace can’t sing and thinks the Sunset Strip is still hip and cool. Well, fuck you, Ace, maybe you should douse yourself in alcohol, do a line and light yourself on fire. That would surely be more entertaining than “Anomaly”. By the by, everything sounds terrible, so you don’t know shit about producing albums either.

By the way, when did this guy get the “guitar hero“status? Are they giving these out in seedy bars in L.A.? Kids who play the video game have probably more finger-ability than Ace. His solos are nearly Fred Durst level hacks.

I know that being a fan of a behemoth of an iconic band like Kiss can make you semi-retarded, but let’s keep some fucking sense here, people. Ace was never Malmsteen, and the best depiction I’ve ever seen of him has been on Family Guy (Rock and rollllllll).

So, yeah, if you smoke crack and have absolutely no love for life anymore, or if you sniff glue and your brain just doesn’t process things anymore, you might like this. Otherwise, even if you’re a Kiss fan, this will just waste your time.

Like Hitler says at the end of the “Inglorious Basterds” trailer: NEIN, NEIN, NEIN, NEIN.

The cover: I’d laugh, if I wasn’t vomiting from my eyes.
